新しい年

暮れからの雪が村を白い世界に変え、お正月を迎えた。雪の村にお地蔵さまの小屋があった。村の人たちが手厚くしているのであろう、お地蔵さまはワラで編んだ衣につつまれていた。なんだか雪国に伝わる民話のようで心あたたまる。空から冬の太陽がうっすら顔を出した。いつの間にか、降ってはやみ、やんでは降る長い雪国の冬が始まった。

There is a Jizo stone statue shack in the snowy village. The statues of Jizo, the guardian deity of children, are bundled up in straw clothes that the villagers had made for them and they look like they came right out of a snow country folk tale. The winter sun peeks out from behind the clouds in the sky. But it quickly disappears again as the snowfall starts and stops all day long. The long winter here in the snow country has only just begun.

 

雪国の音

年の暮れは、どこの家からもモチつきの音が聞こえ、子供にとってそれは新しい年を迎えるわくわくした楽しい音でもあった。十日町市赤倉は、そんな思い出がよみがえってきそうな集落であった。

As the year draws to a close, the sound of people pounding rice cakes can be heard from every home. Children buzz with excitement in anticipation of the New Year holidays. Akakura in Tokamachi is a town that vividly brings back memories of youth.
