こんにゃく畑

紅葉に彩られた山ぎわの畑で、こんにゃく玉の収穫が行われていた。こんにゃく玉は水はけのよい土地が適しているのだそうだ。だから、急斜面で仕事のしにくいところに上等のこんにゃく玉ができる。こんにゃく玉堀りは１１月の末まで、早朝から夕方まで続く。

A Konnyaku Field

In a field at the foot of a scarlet-tinged mountain, farmers were harvesting
bulbs of “konnyaku.”  They say the bulbs grow best on land that drains well
so they are cultivated on steep inclines, making the work very difficult.
The harvesting continues from early morning to evening until the end of
November.

 

コスモス

わずかな風にゆれるコスモスの花は美しい。このごろはコスモスが一面に咲く高原もあるが、やはり、そっと咲いている姿に心をひかれる。子供のころ、花びらを数枚ぬきとり、空に向けて投げると花はクルクルと回転しながら舞いおりてきた。懐かしい遊びである。霜がおりる季節を迎えても、花こそ小さくなるが、コスモスは行く秋をいつまでも楽しませてくれる花である。

Cosmos flowers swaying in a gentle breeze are a truly beautiful sight. While it’s possible these days to find entire fields of the flower, my heart is most moved by discovered a few of them blooming modestly here and there. As a child, I used to pluck several petals from a flower and throw it in the air to watch it spiral and dance to the ground. It is a game that fills me with nostalgia. When frost begins to form, the flowers get smaller, yet this is one flower that always lets me enjoy the parting of autumn.
